Nuclear Shape in Muscle Cells
Every student of muscle ultrastructure is familiar with the frequently convoluted appearance of the muscle cell nucleus (e .g . Figs . 1-3) . It is a reasonable assumption that this particular shape of the nucleus can be correlated with the contracted state of the muscle fiber . Lane (12) was able to show that in contracting intestinal smooth muscle cells the nucleus undergoes a change from an ...
متن کاملAbnormal nuclear shape and impaired mechanotransduction in emerin-deficient cells
Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy can be caused by mutations in the nuclear envelope proteins lamin A/C and emerin. We recently demonstrated that A-type lamin-deficient cells have impaired nuclear mechanics and altered mechanotransduction, suggesting two potential disease mechanisms (Lammerding, J., P.C. Schulze, T. Takahashi, S. Kozlov, T. Sullivan, R.D. Kamm, C.L. Stewart, and R.T. Lee. 2004....
متن کاملDeformation-based nuclear morphometry: capturing nuclear shape variation in HeLa cells.
The empirical characterization of nuclear shape distributions is an important unsolved problem with many applications in biology and medicine. Numerous genetic diseases and cancers have alterations in nuclear morphology, and methods for characterization of morphology could aid in both diagnoses and fundamental understanding of these disorders. Automated approaches have been used to measure feat...
متن کاملEfficient Muscle Shape Deformation
In this paper we extend previous work [Aubel00] and propose a muscle model suitable for computer graphics based on physiological and anatomical considerations. Muscle motion and deformation is automatically derived from an action line that is deformed using a 1D mass-spring system. The resulting model is fast and can accommodate most superficial human muscles.
متن کاملNuclear shape, mechanics, and mechanotransduction.
In eukaryotic cells, the nucleus contains the genome and is the site of transcriptional regulation. The nucleus is the largest and stiffest organelle and is exposed to mechanical forces transmitted through the cytoskeleton from outside the cell and from force generation within the cell. Here, we discuss the effect of intra- and extracellular forces on nuclear shape and structure and how these f...
